On “Tetrising” your deliverables

Tetris

The beginning of the month is a time of reflection for me, as I tally up my hours worked and accomplishments, er, accomplished, like I mentioned yesterday.  As it happens, this past month went pretty well, by the numbers, with a solid gain over the previous month that continues the curve I’m working on, but it lacked a big win.

And that’s cool, because I’m about to Tetris.

OK, quick recap – Tetris. Big PC game back in the ’80s when nowhere near as many people had computers, which then made it to consoles and later arcade games in student pubs.  It’s the block dropping game where you place the falling bricks to make solid horizontal lines.  And if you can clear multiple lines at a time, so much the better.  The best thing in Tetris life is to keep a single vertical column free, filling in every other space in a four line span, and then waiting for a 4×1 block to appear.

BOOM! From “not a lot going on, might be in trouble here” to massive bonus points.

And that’s what’s about to happen with me, it seems.  Two to three side projects, all started to explore different ideas, technologies, and marketing angles, are all pretty much poised to pop, in a month with not a lot of anticipated Big Deals.

Now, I’m not suggesting that launching 3 projects at once is the right way to do things, even for a soft launch, but it feels kind of good to know these apps are in my back pocket.  I haven’t decided yet if I’ll soft launch all of them as tests or roll them out one by one over a sustained period of time.

What I am sure of though, is that I’m starting to line up my next 4 rows on the Tetris deliverables pipeline.
